For nearly 40 years, Counseling In Schools has created and fostered relationships with local schools, homeless shelters, and communities to enable New York City’s children to thrive – academically, socially, and emotionally. Our expert team includes licensed mental health and youth development professionals who fully integrate into the community, providing programs that equip children, families, teachers, and administrators with the right tools for preventing and coping with the challenges they face. Counseling In Schools (CIS) is seeking Success Mentors for multiple schools in Brooklyn, NY. Mentor responsibilities are determined by what research shows are the most effective practices for engaging at-risk students and their families. These include personally greeting students upon arrival in the morning to make them feel welcomed and noticed, engaging caregivers, calling home when the mentee is absent, and supporting culture and climate activities and events that encourage school attendance. Additionally, Mentors connect students and families with a wide range of services to help them overcome barriers to school success and graduation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Flag mentees for early intervention before absenteeism escalates
  • Collaborate with mentors to gather context and insights
  • Work with mentors to develop attendance improvement plans
  • Identify root causes (academic, social, family, health, motivation)
  • Set clear goals, benchmarks, and follow-up timelines
  • Coordinate supports and referrals as needed (school staff, counselors, family outreach)
  • Maintain data and track interventions

Qualifications:

  • Perfect for College Students or Retirees
  • Must be able to pass a background check and DOE fingerprinting 
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED - College Degree Preferred
  • High energy and ability to connect with teenagers and maintain professional boundaries
  • Bilingual in Spanish is a plus

Reports To: Community School Director or Program Director

Compensation: $25-$27/hourly; commensurate with experience 

Additional Info:
  • 12-18 hrs per week
  • This position reports to an assigned NYC public school site daily.
  • Multiple hourly positions are available and may be combined into a full-time role for the right candidate.
